An Experimental Study on Pulmonary Lesions in Rabbits induced by Repeated Injection of Homologous Lung Tissue with Adjuvant

Abstract
It is well known that dead or damaged tissue acts as an irritant to the individual and can cause an inflammatory lesion, but the mechanism concerning to it is yet unknown.
An experiment on rabbits was carried out to observe if any inflammatory lesion could occur in them by repeatedly injecting them with homologous lung tissue and Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant, and then to explore the mechanism for it. 4 groups of .animals were injected subcutaneously with Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant, lung tissue, lung tissue plus Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant and brain tissue plus Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant, respectively. One more animal groups were injected with physiological saline solution, as normal control. The results obtained were as follows:
1) The lungs of the main animal group, which received lung tissue plus Freund¢¥s
complete adjuvant, showed marked histopathological changes, namely, interstitial pneumonitis (consisting of small round cell infiltration to alveolar septum and stroma, and proliferation of fibroblasts), granulomatous inflammation and thickening of small arterial walls.
2) The lungs of the first control animal group, which received Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant only, also showed some changes resembling those of the main group, but in lesser degree.
3) The lungs of the second control animal group, which received lung tissue only, showed slight changes of the same type, but in far lesser degree as compared with the former two groups.
4) While the lungs of the third control animal group, which received brain (instead of . lung) plus Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant, showed lesser inflammatory changes of the
